Posting American Flags at
Quantico National Cemetery

Memorial Day 2007

Boy Scout Troop 1396, Lake Ridge, VA

As part of what has become a Memorial Day tradition, Boy Scout Troop 1396, Lake Ridge, VA, sponsored by St. Matthew's Lutheran Church of Lake Ridge, participated in raising flags of the United States of America at Quantico National Cemetery on Quantico Marine Corps Base, Quantico, VA.  They were joined by scouts from other boy and girl scout troops and well as Webelos and cub scouts, as they all fulfilled part of their Scout oath and pledge....... "On my honor, I will do my best, to do my duty, to God and my Country.........."  These Scouts cheerfully gave their time and efforts in what has become an annual service project for Troop 1396 as they placed over three hundred American flags along the various tree-lined drives and roadways throughout the Quantico National Cemetery.  When asked, the Scouts gave a sense of this being the least they could do for their country when so many have and are sacrificing so much.

This is one of the many activities of the Boy Scouts of America and Troop 1396, events for the Scouts to learn and have fun.  The flag-raising was followed by a Scout Court of Honor and then a family picnic in nearby Locust Shade Park, Triangle, VA, where scouts and families enjoyed some fishing, fun and games.  There are four hundred beautiful acres of outdoor fun at this park which includes batting cages, miniature golf, driving range, playgrounds, tennis courts, hiking trails, picnic pavilions, a sand volleyball court, and a well stocked eight acre pond.

If you are a boy, ages 6 through 17 years old, first grade through senior in high school, or if you are an interested parent, you are cordially invited to learn more about scouting and activities like this and many other of a wide range of activities oriented toward having fun and developing boys into young men better prepared to meet the challenges of life.  Prospective Boy Scouts may visit Boy Scout Troop 1396, sponsored by St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, which meets each Tuesday from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm, during the school year at Lake Ridge Middle School (corner of Old Bridge and Mohican Roads), or during June – August at St. Matthew’s (also off Old Bridge).   Or, you may contact Mr. Kurt Schwoppe, Troop 1396 Scoutmaster, via telephone at (703) 590-1248 or e-mail at schwoppe@comcast.net.
